Doing Good – James 4:17

Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

  • Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

We ought to obey God when we understand His intentions. But in our lives, many people don’t put it into practice, it’s not because they don’t understand God’s requirements but because they are unwilling to practice. For example, a sister’s husband couldn’t find a job, so she complained against him and turned away from him because she thought her husband was a good-for-nothing and freeloader. She knew she should be tolerant of him but couldn’t put it into practice. It is recorded in the Book of Hebrews 10:26, “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins.” It can be seen that if we sin knowingly and willfully, we will easily be abandoned by God. Then what should we do to practice according to God’s will?

First, understand that God looks upon our every action in our lives.

God’s word says, “Whenever God arranges a circumstance for you, He is watching in secret, looking upon your heart, looking upon your thoughts and considerations, looking at how you think, looking at how you will act. If you are a careless person—a person who has never been serious about God’s way, God’s word, or the truth—then you won’t be mindful, you won’t pay attention to that which God wants to complete, and that which God demands of you when He arranges circumstances for you. You also won’t know how the people, things, and matters that you encounter relate to the truth or God’s intentions. After you face repeated circumstances and repeated trials like this, with God not seeing any achievements to your name, how will God proceed? … there’s only one attitude that God has toward these people. What attitude is this? God spurns this kind of person from the bottom of His heart.” When we know God looks upon our every action and all of our thoughts and ideas, we dare not follow our wills to do anything.

Second, it’s essential to pray to and rely on God

God’s word says, “Without praying …, it is impossible to grasp the condition of spiritual life.” “As soon as you pray, the Holy Spirit will work on you; He will give you a type of feeling and make you come out of the incorrect condition. …Often times, you know that this condition is not right, but if you don’t have the proper method, you can’t turn around. Even if you understood the truth, you wouldn’t be able to practice it; even if you knew your improper condition inside (being arrogant, corrupt, or rebellious), you wouldn’t be able to adjust or suppress it. … Not praying for a long time is very dangerous! Prayer is so critical!” We can tell God of our difficulties when we can’t practice the word of the Lord. And unknowingly, the Holy Spirit will give us strength to help us overcome our sin.

Do you feel that you know God’s requirements of some matters but cannot follow them in real life? Hope this will be helpful.
