Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
– 1 John 2:15
- Thought on Today’s Verse:
It is said in 1 John 2:15, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” If our hearts are taken up with the things in the world, we won’t have the thought to love God, nor worship Him with a focused heart.
Many people spend their time and energy in pursuing money and reputation. Though they occasionally come before the Lord but cannot quiet their hearts. Once one’s heart is taken up with reputation, how can he have the thought to come before the Lord? Jesus teaches us, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mak 12:30). Some approve of these words, but they cannot give up the pleasures of the world, nor do they act according to Jesus’ demands.
If we wish to love not the world, neither the things that are in the world, we need to understand where the worldly things come from. I read a passage in a spiritual book: “So Satan uses fame and gain to control man’s thoughts until all they can think of is fame and gain. They struggle for fame and gain, suffer hardships for fame and gain, endure humiliation for fame and gain, sacrifice everything they have for fame and gain, and they will make any judgment or decision to both maintain and obtain fame and gain. In this way, Satan binds man with invisible shackles. These shackles are borne on people’s bodies, and they have not the strength nor courage to throw them off. So people trudge ever onward in great difficulty, unknowingly bearing these shackles. For the sake of this fame and gain, mankind becomes estranged from God and betrays Him. With each passing generation, mankind becomes more and more wicked, more and more darkened, and so in this way one generation after another is destroyed in the fame and gain of Satan.”
Worldly affairs are not from God but the tricks that Satan tempts man to leave God. When we see through these, we will have discernment of worldly affairs and our hearts won’t be taken up. If we no longer love the world or worldly affairs, our love for God will be developed unknowingly.
