Living in this dark and heartless world, more and more people are burdened by worry and anxiety.
Some worry about job insecurity, some fear the sudden onset of illness, some are troubled by family problems, while others feel confused and uneasy about the future. The constant stream of news about wars, disasters, economic pressures, and other crises only leaves many people feeling even more overwhelmed and uncertain.
Even those who believe in God can sometimes become weak and fearful. When unexpected difficulties arise, we may wonder whether we will be able to endure them. When we cannot see the road ahead, we may also feel lost and confused.
Yet the Bible gives us these powerful words: “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
This verse is not merely a word of comfort; it is also a promise from God to everyone who trusts in Him. So why has God not given us a spirit of fear? And what help does this verse offer us today?
First, we need to understand that fear is more than simply being afraid.
It is natural for people to feel nervous and worried when facing danger, difficulties, or the unknown. However, the “spirit of fear” that God speaks of refers to losing faith when confronted with circumstances—seeing only the difficulties while failing to see God’s presence and guidance.
Many times, we are afraid because we feel that everything depends on us. When situations go beyond our abilities, we become helpless and anxious.
But God wants us to understand that He is the One who rules over all things.
God says, “You should know that all of your surrounding environment is permitted and arranged by Me. Be clear on this and satisfy My heart in the environment that I have given to you. Do not be afraid of this and that, the Almighty God of hosts will surely be with you; He is your backup force, and He is your shield” (The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Utterances of Christ in the Beginning, Chapter 26).
From these words, we can see that God has never promised that we will not encounter difficulties in life. What He has promised is that He will be with us no matter what circumstances we face.
Because God is sovereign over all things, those who trust in Him do not need to be bound by fear.
This verse also tells us that God has given us a spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
“Power” does not mean relying on our own strength or pretending to be strong. Rather, it means continuing to trust in and rely on God in the face of difficulties. “Love” means living out a life of loving God and loving others even amid pressure and suffering. “A sound mind” means remaining clear-minded and rational, not being controlled by fear or swayed by circumstances, but acting according to God’s word.
When we truly believe that God is sovereign over all things, our hearts are filled with strength, peace, and confidence. We know that no matter what lies ahead, God is leading us forward.
Understanding the meaning of this verse is important, but even more important is putting it into practice in our daily lives. When fear, anxiety, and worry arise, we should first learn to come before God rather than relying solely on our own ways to solve our problems. Many times, the more people rely on their own analysis, the more they become trapped in worry; the more they try to control the future, the more they lose their peace.
The path God has given us is to learn to rely on Him.
God says, “Be quiet within Me, for I am your God, your only Redeemer. You must quiet your hearts and live within Me at all times; I am your rock, your buttress. Harbor no other thoughts, but rely on Me with your whole hearts and I will certainly appear to you—I am your God! Ah, those doubters! They surely cannot stand firm and will gain nothing” (The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Utterances of Christ in the Beginning, Chapter 26).
When we face difficulties, we can first quiet ourselves before God in prayer and entrust our worries and burdens to Him. When we do not know which path to take, we can seek God’s words more and look for answers in them. When fear continues to trouble us, we can remind ourselves that God is still sovereign and that He has never left us.
True faith is not believing in God only after circumstances have changed; it is continuing to trust Him even when circumstances have not yet changed. When we learn to turn our focus from our difficulties to God and shift our reliance from ourselves to Him, we will gradually experience the real power spoken of in this verse.
2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, retreat, or despair, but a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.
Perhaps today you are worried about life, anxious about the future, or surrounded by various pressures and difficulties. But remember this: God has never left us. He is still sovereign over our circumstances, and He is still sovereign over our future.
When we are willing to come before God, rely on Him, seek Him, and trust in Him, we will discover that true peace does not come from a change in circumstances, but from God’s presence.
May God’s word become our strength, enabling us to break free from the bondage of fear and to walk every step ahead with faith and hope under His guidance.
