8 Bible Verses to Bring Comfort in Times of Disaster

Do you ever feel like the world is becoming more and more unsafe? Earthquakes, floods, pandemics, wars…. Some disasters strike so suddenly, catching us off guard, and we can truly feel exhausted, scared, and alone. But these Bible verses and phrases can bring comfort in moments of disaster, and offer faith and hope for the days to come.

1. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

In these past few years, we’ve experienced so much: earthquakes, pandemics, wars, fires, floods…. Do you, like me, often feel an indescribable unease in your heart? Sometimes, when we watch the news, it feels as if the world is on the verge of collapse.

But every time I read this verse, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” I feel in my heart like someone has pulled me out of the water, allowing me to take a deep breath of air. God is our refuge, our ever-present help. It’s not that God only responds after we pray for a long time, nor does He only help certain particularly spiritual people. Rather, as soon as you call out to Him, He is right there.

Even if earthquakes strike, mountains collapse, and the world becomes unrecognizable to us, God remains our unshakeable refuge. You can imagine a child in the midst of chaos, rushing into their father’s arms and holding on tight. God wants us to run to Him just like that—no need to wait, He is always there.

Don’t be afraid. No matter what you see with your own eyes today or what the news reports, God is always the God who protects us.

2. “He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust” (Psalm 91:1-2).

Sometimes, we feel like life is a battle, because every day the news is filled with reports of disasters: wars, earthquakes, plagues, fires, and more. Then there are the heartbreaks and breakdowns within us that no one reports. We are all searching for a place where our hearts can find rest.

Psalm 91:2 says: “He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.” God alone is our reliance, our only refuge. As long as we take shelter in Him, we are safe.

Just as God says: “You should know these are the last days. Devils and Satan, like roaring lions, prowl all over, searching for people to devour. All manner of plagues now break out, and there are many evil spirits of various kinds. Only I am the true God; only I am your refuge. Only if you now hide in My secret place, and are within Me, will the disasters not befall you, and calamity not come near your tent(The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Utterances of Christ in the Beginning, Chapter 28).

God wants us to know that we don’t need to be perfect or highly spiritual to enter the refuge. Whenever we are tired, afraid, or feel we can’t go on any longer, we can run to Him and dwell in His secret place.

God doesn’t look at whether you are worthy of protection, but whether you are willing to come to Him.

If your heart has been very troubled lately, like a small boat drifting on the water, you can pause and say to God, “God, You are the One I rely on,” and that is enough. God will calm your heart.

3.When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle on you(Isaiah 43:2).

How much “fire” and “water” have we gotten through in these years? Pandemics have thrown the world into chaos, floods have submerged cities, earthquakes have shaken people too much to dare return home, and even the air has become severely polluted….

Do you ever feel like a supporting character trapped in a disaster movie, unsure if the next scene will bring collapse or everything spinning out of control?

But in Isaiah 43:2, God tells us: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle on you.” God didn’t say, “I will let you avoid these things,” but rather, “I will be with you.

We may shed tears, we may feel fear, we may grow weary, but we will not be burned up, nor will we be swallowed up. This is because God isn’t waiting for us at the finish line; He journeys with us every step of the way.

Some paths we find impassable because they are not meant for us. But for the path we are on now, even if it’s a path of “fire” or “water,” do not be afraid. God is by our side; we are not struggling alone. It’s just that we haven’t yet clearly seen that what we are traversing isn’t leading to destruction, but is a testimony to God journeying with us.

4. “You are my hiding place; you shall preserve me from trouble; you shall compass me about with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7).

Recently, there have been so many sudden disasters. Flash floods erupt, sweeping away entire villages; earthquakes strike, turning homes into ruins; diagnosis, unemployment, loss of loved ones, and so on—peaceful lives are suddenly shattered by a single phone call....

In these moments, people truly don’t know what else to do. Those fleeing disaster want to find a place to hide; the heartbroken want to find a place to weep.

Psalm 32:7 speaks to us in such times: “You are my hiding place.” These words are so precious! God isn’t standing outside the disaster shouting “Keep going!” to us; He is the place we can take refuge in. He not only protects us but also allows us, even in our most unsettling times, to hear the “songs of deliverance” surrounding us.

We may still be in the midst of disaster. Our circumstances may not have changed, but God will first comfort our hearts. We don’t have to wait until everything is over to find peace; we just need to pause and say, “God, I want to hide in You.”

He will embrace us and show us how to navigate the path ahead. We are not alone; there is a hiding place always open to us.

5.Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go(Joshua 1:9).

On the day of the earthquake, I saw some surveillance footage: A man who could barely stand steady was shielding his child while using his body to block falling glass. There was fear and helplessness in his eyes too.

At that moment, I wonder if he recalled this verse: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go(Joshua 1:9).

Honestly, who isn’t afraid in the face of disaster? We are not naturally fearless people, but God says, “Jehovah your God is with you.” God is always with us as we move forward.

Wherever you go”—this means that whether we are now in a hospital bed, under a temporary tent, or in some teetering house, God is with us.

Being strong isn’t about toughing it out; it’s believing that you are not facing it alone. God is before you and beside you. You don’t need to be strong; you just need to believe, and He will protect you.

6. “A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you” (Psalm 91:7).

We’ve all seen or personally experienced such scenes: floodwaters swamping cities, engulfing houses, cars, and even entire streets; the ground shaking violently, buildings collapsing, and many people running in panic…. Who wouldn’t be afraid at such a time? Because you don’t know if the disaster will strike you.

But Psalm 91:7 says: “A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.”

This isn’t denying how terrible reality is, but rather telling us: Even if disaster seems as close as it can possibly get, God can still protect you.

You might ask: “What if my home has already been affected by disaster?” Sometimes God’s protection means sparing you from suffering, and sometimes it means keeping you from being overwhelmed in the midst of suffering. Those around you may fall, but you are still able to stand; the hearts of those around you are terrified, yet you still have peace. That is a silent protection; it’s God’s unseen hand holding you steady.

7. “There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:10-11).

Disasters always happen so suddenly: earthquakes, plagues, wars, fires, falling elevators, missing flights…. You simply have no time to react. Afterward, you can only wonder, “How on earth did I survive?”

The Psalms say: “There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:10-11).

Do you know what this means? It means that even if you don’t know how to avoid danger, God knows. He even sends angels to clear the path for you, to shield you from calamities you cannot even see. You might not feel like any miracle has happened, but when you look back, you’ve bypassed an accident, escaped a difficult situation, and walked through a path where you should have broken down. That wasn’t luck; it was God’s protection for His chosen people.

God says: “You have all lived for so many years, and almost every one of you has encountered many dangerous situations and faced many temptations in your lifetime. This is because Satan is standing beside you, its eyes constantly fixed on you. When disaster strikes you, Satan revels in this; when calamities befall you, when nothing goes right for you, when you become entangled in Satan’s web, Satan takes great enjoyment from these things. As for what God is doing, He is protecting you with each passing moment, steering you away from one misfortune after another and from one disaster after another. This is why I say that everything man has—peace and joy, blessings and personal safety—is in fact all under God’s control; He guides and holds sovereignty over the fate of every individual(The Word, Vol. 2. On Knowing God. God Himself, the Unique VI).

God hasn’t promised us that the world will be peaceful, but He has promised to send His angels to be by our side, guarding us. Even if you don’t know where the future will take you, as long as you are one of God’s chosen, you are already under His protection.

8. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19).

The world today is in turmoil, with wave after wave of disasters such as wars, plagues, earthquakes, floods, and fires. Coupled with the hardships of life, this makes people feel fear, pain, and helplessness. You may have asked the Lord more than once: “Lord, I have always believed in You; why are these things happening to me?”

In fact, Psalm 34:19 has already told us: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous.” Yes, those who believe in the Lord will also encounter suffering, perhaps even more than others. But the emphasis of this verse is not on the suffering, but on the latter half: “but the LORD delivers him out of them all.” God has not promised us that we will not encounter difficulties, but He does promise to rescue us from them all.

God says: “When the waters swallow humans whole, I save them from those stagnant waters and give them a chance to live anew. When people lose their confidence to live, I pull them up from the brink of death, granting them the courage to go on so that they can use Me as a foundation for their existence. When people rebel against Me, I cause them to know Me from within their rebellion. In light of humanity’s old nature, and in light of My mercy, rather than putting humans to death, I allow them to repent and make a fresh start. When they suffer famine, even though they have a single breath left in their bodies, I wrest them from death, preventing them from falling prey to Satan’s trickery(The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. God’s Words to the Entire Universe, Chapter 14).

Do you hear that? We are not overlooked believers; God knows what we are going through. We feel we can’t endure it anymore, but God has already prepared a way out. Even if we are weak, rebellious, or lacking in faith, He still chooses to save us and lead us out of hardship, just as He once led David, Joseph, and Habakkuk.

Don’t give up, and don’t try to carry it all on your own. Tell God: “God, save me!” You will find He has long been waiting for us to rely on Him, so that He might save us to the uttermost.

Conclusion:

Honestly, when we see disasters growing larger and more frequent, we all feel afraid and also wonder, “Will disaster strike me next?” But after reading these verses and phrases, our hearts truly found peace. It’s not because the disasters are gone, but because we know we are not alone. God is always there; precisely when we are afraid, at a loss, and can’t see a way out, He is the refuge we can run into. You don’t need to pretend everything is fine, nor do you need to feign strength; you just need to return to God to accept His salvation and protection.
