One afternoon after 3 p.m., I had hardly come back home when the phone rang. I picked it up and there came my husband’s feeble voice, “I had an accident.” When I heard this, my heart suddenly jumped into my throat and I asked quickly, “Where are you? Are you all right?” Before I could hear his whereabouts, the phone suddenly went dead. At that time, my heart was pounding and my whole body felt limp. I urgently cried out to God in my heart, “Oh God! My husband had an accident. I don’t know how and where he is. Oh God! Please lead me to find him.” Just when I was in a panic, it suddenly struck me that I could ask my brother-in-law to take me by motorcycle to look for my husband.
Then, we two looked for my husband along his way home, during which I kept praying. Suddenly I saw a crowd gathering around in the distance and my heart immediately clenched, “Maybe my husband is there. So many people gather around; is he dead?” Then I hurried there and saw my husband lying and moaning on the ground, pale and sweaty. At the sight of this, I felt my heart prickled painfully. Knowing someone had called an ambulance, I immediately comforted my husband, “Hold on; the ambulance is coming; you’re gonna be fine.” He said weakly, “My belly ached badly. I’m afraid I can’t make it.” After I heard his words, my heart beat violently, tears streaming down my face. I was burning with anxiety and desperate for the ambulance to come quickly. Finally the ambulance arrived, but just then I suddenly found that I had no money with me. Just as I was anxious, I thought of God and called out to Him, “Oh God! I forgot to bring money. What can I do?” Right then, a man handed 3,000 yuan to me. I was moved to tears because I deeply knew it was God’s deed. At that time, I thought of God’s words, “The heart and spirit of man are held in the hand of God….” “That’s right. The heart and spirit of man are in God’s hands. It’s God’s orchestration and arrangement that this man whom I have met just a couple of times could lend money to me.” I then immediately went in the ambulance with my husband. On the way to the hospital, I kept calling to God in my heart, “Oh God! Whether my husband will live or die is in Your hands. Please protect me to obey Your sovereignty and arrangement.”
After we arrived at the hospital, the doctor gave my husband a thorough examination. When the doctor got the results back, he looked and looked at the X-rays with his brows knitted, and said seriously, “I’m afraid his liver is ruptured and bleeding. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, he will die. I’m sorry, but we can’t cure him, because our hospital doesn’t have the necessary medical equipment.” The moment I heard these words, darkness came over my eyes and I almost fainted. In a trance, I heard him saying, “I advise you to go to the Second People’s Hospital of the city which has the equipment. Hurry up. The longer you delay, the more he will be at risk.” Hearing this, I thought to myself, “Oh, no! Can my husband last out the ride?” Just when I was worried, God’s words occurred to me: “Who of the whole of mankind is not cared for in the eyes of the Almighty? Who does not live in the midst of the Almighty’s predestination?” God’s words consoled my heart, and I thought, “My husband’s life is held in God’s hands. Whether he will live or die is determined by God. If God doesn’t allow this then he won’t die no matter what would happen on the way.” At this thought, I gradually calmed down.
Then, we quickly checked out and rushed to the Second People’s Hospital. On the way I constantly urged the driver to drive fast. Finally, we checked in. However, after the doctor looked over the X-rays, he said, “He’s in critical condition. We can’t cure him. I suggest you take him to the provincial hospital.” Upon hearing his words, I quivered with fear, head buzzing. I thought to myself, “Time is life. Three hours have already passed since the accident happened. Yet the provincial hospital is five hours away. Can he make it there?” And again, I came to pray before God, “Oh God! The doctor told me to take my husband to the provincial hospital. But it’s a long way. I’m afraid he can’t make it there. I don’t know what I should do. Oh God! I’m willing to entrust my husband to You. His life is at Your mercy. Please protect me to be obedient.” AfterI felt a bit calmer. Then we rushed to the provincial hospital. In the ambulance I called my son and asked him to go to the hospital with his family as quickly as possible. Looking at my unconscious husband, I was filled with anxiety. Knowing every second is critical for him, I stared at the sphygmomanometer and the ventilator unblinkingly, fearing he would die at any time. In a panic, I suddenly thought of a line of God’s words: “If you have but one breath, God will not let you die.” “That’s right. Whether my husband will live or die is held in God’s hands. If God doesn’t allow this then my husband won’t die so long as he has but one breath.” With the guidance of God’s words, I had faith and strength.
As time passed, I became scared again. Over 1 a.m., we finally arrived at the hospital, where my son, daughter-in-law and grandson were waiting in advance. We quickly went through the admission procedures and then my husband was diagnosed as the ruptures of his liver and large intestine. There was lots of escaped excrement in his abdomen, and he needed an immediate operation. The chief doctor said, “You’ve come too late. But it’s a miracle that he’s still alive after such a long time.” Hearing this, I knew it was because of God’s care and protection. Over 3 a.m. my husband went into the surgery. We sat on the bench outside, waiting silently. The silence of night made me feel very desolate. I really hoped that he would survive safe and sound.
Over 5 a.m., my husband was moved to the intensive care unit. The doctor said that my husband hadn’t been out of danger, so we still had to wait. It was not until 2 p.m. that we were finally allowed to enter the ICU. Seeing my husband lying motionless with his eyes closed, I couldn’t help shedding tears. Though I was pained, I felt a little comfort: It has been twelve hours since the accident happened. If it weren’t for God’s protection, my husband would have died. All this is God’s wonderful deed. What was more miraculous was that my husband was transferred to a general ward three days later and recovered quickly after that: The next day, he could get out of bed and walk around a bit. Even the doctor marveled, “Your husband is so lucky.” Hearing this, I thought, “How are you to know that it is God’s grace?” Eight days later, my husband was discharged from the hospital and we returned to our peaceful life. Enjoying God’s grace, I kept thanking Him in my heart.
In this accident, my husband was very close to death, but he survived safe and sound without any sequel, from which I saw God’s authority. In this experience, it was God that led me step by step. When I was in fear and helplessness, His words gave me strength and removed my fear, and hardened my faith. I deeply experienced that nothing is difficult for God and that as long as we rely on and look up to God, He will lead us to pass through our difficulties. Thank God!
