What Are the Consequences of Sin? How Can We Break Free From Sin and Enter the Kingdom of Heaven?
Many people who sincerely believe in the Lord carry an unspoken pain in their hearts: Although they have believed in the Lord for many years and often pray and confess their sins, when things happen, they still lie, lose their temper, become jealous, compete with others, and even complain about God. Could it really be that as long as we confess our sins, everything is fine? If a person continues to live in sin, what will the final outcome be? This article begins with biblical truth to help you understand the consequences of sin and find the path to breaking free from sin.
I. Introduction
The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death …” (Romans 6:23).
This verse speaks very directly, without any detour. What sin brings is not merely some loss, nor temporary suffering, but death—destruction. This “death” does not only refer to the end of physical life, but even more to the fact that because of sin, people lose God’s presence, are ultimately eliminated by God, and lose the qualification to enter the kingdom of heaven.
But today, many people have become insensitive to sin. After believing in the Lord, many people think, “The Lord Jesus was crucified and bore our sins. As long as we pray to the Lord, confess our sins, and repent, the Lord forgives our sins. We are still people who are saved, and in the future we will still be able to enter the kingdom of heaven.” This sounds reasonable. But if we quiet ourselves and honestly examine ourselves, we will discover a very real problem: Although we believe in the Lord, sin does not seem to have truly left us.
II. What Are the Consequences of Sin?
Many brothers and sisters have experienced this state: When praying, they are very sincere, and when confessing their sins, they may even shed tears. But once they return to real life, they still cannot help but lose their temper, lie, become jealous, judge others, scheme for their own interests, complain about why God did not protect them when circumstances are unfavorable, feel unwilling to accept it when they see others doing better than themselves, and although they say they love the Lord, in their hearts they still long for the world and pursue fame, gain, and status … These are not small matters, but the real expressions of sin.
The problem is this: If our sins are only forgiven, but we have not truly been cleansed, then we are still living under the power of sin. We are not free people—we are still people bound by sin. The Lord Jesus said clearly: “Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the son stays ever” (John 8:34–35).
These words pierce the heart, but they are true. The Lord Jesus did not say that as long as a person believes in Him, it does not matter if that person continues to sin. He pointed out a fact: As long as a person still often sins and is still controlled by sin, that person is a servant of sin; and a servant cannot remain in the house forever. This shows that a person who still lives in sin and has not broken free from sin is not qualified to enter God’s kingdom.
Some people may be unwilling to accept these words, thinking that since they have believed in the Lord for many years, have served Him enthusiastically, and have expended themselves for Him, God surely would not keep them out of the kingdom. But God’s disposition is righteous and holy. He will never allow filthy people to enter His kingdom.
Just as God says: “You must know what kind of people I desire; those who are filthy are not permitted to enter into the kingdom, those who are filthy are not permitted to defile the holy ground. Though you may have done much work, and worked for many years, in the end you are still deplorably filthy, and it is intolerable to the law of Heaven that you wish to enter My kingdom! From the creation of the world until today, never have I offered such easy access to My kingdom to those who curry favor with Me. This is a heavenly rule, and no one can break it!” (The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Success or Failure Depends on the Path One Walks).
These words are severe, but they let us see one fact: God values not only how much work a person has done outwardly, how far a person has traveled, or how much a person has suffered. More importantly, God values whether a person has been cleansed inwardly. God is holy, and man cannot see the Lord unless he is holy. As long as there is still filth and corruption within a person, and they still often live in sin, they cannot possibly enter the kingdom of heaven directly. This is not because God deliberately makes things difficult for people, but because it is determined by God’s righteous disposition.
So, what exactly are the consequences of sin? In a less serious sense, sin causes people to grow farther and farther away from God, living in pain, darkness, and without peace. In a more serious sense, sin will ultimately lead people to destruction. No one should take this consequence lightly.
III. How Can We Break Free From Sin and Enter the Kingdom of Heaven?
Then the question comes: Since all people live in sin, is there any path forward? The answer is yes, and the Lord Jesus already told us long ago.
The Lord Jesus said: “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:12–13). “Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
These two verses are crucial. They allow us to see that what the Lord Jesus did in the Age of Grace was not the whole of God’s work of salvation. What the Lord Jesus completed was the work of redemption, so that man’s sins could be forgiven. But the root cause of man’s sin—namely, man’s corrupt disposition—has not yet been completely resolved. Therefore, when the Lord returns in the last days, He will express the truth and guide people into all truth. Through the truth, He will cleanse people and transform people, enabling them to truly break free from sin.
Just as God says: “Though Jesus came among man and did much work, He only completed the work of redeeming all mankind and served as man’s sin offering; He did not rid man of all his corrupt disposition. Fully saving man from the influence of Satan not only required Jesus to become the sin offering and bear the sins of man, but it also required God to do even greater work to rid man completely of his Satan-corrupted disposition. And so, after man was forgiven of his sins, God returned to the flesh to lead man into the new age, and began the work of chastisement and judgment. This work has brought man into a higher realm. All those who submit under His dominion shall enjoy higher truth and receive greater blessings. They shall truly live in the light, and they shall gain the truth, the way, and the life” (The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Preface).
This passage makes it very clear why we today keep repeating the cycle of confessing and then sinning, and sinning and then confessing. It is not because the Lord’s salvation is insufficient, but because our corrupt disposition still remains within us—arrogance, selfishness, deceit, greed, and evil—these things are still deeply rooted in us. By confession and prayer alone, people can only receive forgiveness, but they cannot break free from sin at its root. Therefore, when the Lord Jesus returns in the last days, He expresses the truth and carries out the work of judging and cleansing man—this is exactly the salvation we need most. This judgment is not merely to condemn man’s sin, but through the truth to expose man’s corruption, so that man may truly know himself, hate the sin within himself, and begin to live out submission to God and reverence for God. Only in this way can man truly break free from the bondage of sin and become a cleansed person.
Ultimately, entering the kingdom of heaven does not depend on verbally confessing, “I believe in the Lord,” nor on outward zeal in running about and working. Rather, it depends on whether a person has accepted the truth and been cleansed. Only by accepting and submitting to God’s work of judgment in the last days can people truly break free from sin, receive salvation, and enter the kingdom of heaven.
IV. Conclusion
Sin is not a small matter—it determines man’s final outcome. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). These words will never become outdated. Today, those who most need to be watchful are not the people who do not believe in God at all, but those who think they are already saved while still living in sin every day.
If we truly long to see the Lord, and truly hope to enter the kingdom of heaven, we cannot stop at merely having our sins forgiven. We must continue to seek the truths expressed by God in the last days and accept God’s work of cleansing man. Only in this way can we stop living in the cycle of confessing and then sinning, and truly be set free from sin and become people who are in accordance with God’s intentions.
