Explanation of Psalm 37:4 - How to Delight in God Amidst Hardship

“Delight yourself also in the LORD: and he shall give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). This verse was written by King David when he faced the prosperity of evildoers and his own difficulties. It encourages us to maintain the right attitude in life: to rely on God in all things, seek closeness to God, obey God’s will, and believe that God will respond to the desires of our hearts. This can help us find inner peace and joy in life, for God is the greatest source of joy and fulfillment in our lives. God is faithful, all-knowing, and loves people. He knows our heart’s needs and is willing to satisfy them. However, God may not fulfill our desires in our way or on our timeline. He has His own plans and arrangements, and His vision is greater and better than we can imagine. Sometimes, God allows us to go through difficulties, challenges, trials, and refinings to strengthen our faith, patience, and obedience. What we need to do is to not doubt, complain, or give up. Instead, we should believe, rely on, wait for, and obey God. We should wait for God’s timing and His way to grant the desires of our hearts. Instead of pursuing what we want with our own strength or wisdom, we should entrust our paths to God, rely on Him, follow His guidance, wait patiently, and avoid impatience or anxiety. We should believe that God will surely fulfill the desires of our hearts according to His good will.

God says, “You must be proactive in cooperating with Me; be diligent, and never be lazy. Always fellowship with Me and attain an even deeper intimacy with Me. If you do not understand, do not be impatient for quick results. It is not that I will not tell you; it is that I want to see whether you rely on Me when you are in My presence, and whether you are confident in your dependence on Me. You must always remain close to Me, and place all matters in My hands. Do not go back in vain. After you have been unconsciously close to Me for a period of time, My intentions shall be revealed to you. If you grasp them, then you will truly come face to face with Me, and you will truly have found My face. You will have much clarity and steadfastness within, and you will have something to rely on. You will then also possess power, as well as confidence, and you will have a path forward. Everything will come easily to you.

God’s word gives us both faith and strength, and it also shows us the path of relying on God. No matter what circumstances we encounter, we should seek God’s will and patiently wait for His guidance. God will then reveal His intentions to us, instilling in us the confidence and strength to face any situation that comes our way. In these moments, our hearts will be filled with joy and peace.
