Today’s Devotion—Listening to God’s Word to Become God’s People, Welcoming the Lord’s Return

Devotional for today

Jesus said, “He that is of God hears God's words: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.”

The words of Jesus provide us with a significant revelation: Not everyone who calls upon God’s name truly belongs to Him. Only those who humbly listen to God’s word are the chosen ones who genuinely follow Him. They have a deep connection with God in their hearts, enabling them to hear His words and recognize His voice. Those who do not belong to God cannot comprehend His words and may even reject and hate them. For instance, when Jesus came to carry out the work of redemption, His disciples and apostles who followed Him were able to humbly listen to His words. In His teachings, they discovered the truth and the life. They recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah, the Christ, and they wholeheartedly accepted and followed Him, thereby receiving salvation. However, let us also consider the Jewish chief priests, scribes, Pharisees, and the people who followed the Pharisees. They did not seek to listen to the words of Jesus. Even if some of them heard His teachings, they were unable to recognize them as the voice of God. Some even resisted and opposed the Lord’s work and words. Despite professing faith in God, they did not heed His words. Therefore, they were not God’s people, but rather individuals who faced condemnation and elimination by God. Through the teachings of Jesus and these examples, we can examine ourselves to see whether we truly belong to God. According to Jesus’ prophecy, “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth(John 16:12–13), we understand that when Jesus comes again, He will speak and guide people into all truth. When we hear someone testifying that the Lord has returned and has spoken all the truths that can save humanity, do we pay attention and listen to the words of the returned Lord to recognize His voice and follow Him, or do we refuse to listen? This reveals whether we truly belong to God or not. It is clear that whether we belong to God and whether we can welcome the Lord depends on whether we can humbly seek to listen to the words of the returned Lord and recognize His voice. As God’s words say, “Since we are searching for the footprints of God, it behooves us to search for God’s will, for the words of God, for His utterances—because wherever there are new words spoken by God, the voice of God is there, and wherever there are the footsteps of God, God’s deeds are there. Wherever there is the expression of God, there God appears, and wherever God appears, there the truth, the way, and the life exist. In seeking God’s footprints, you have ignored the words “God is the truth, the way, and the life.” And so, many people, even when they receive the truth, do not believe that they have found God’s footprints, and still less do they acknowledge the appearance of God. What a grave mistake!(The Word, Vol. 1. The Appearance and Work of God. Appendix 4: Beholding the Appearance of God in His Judgment and Chastisement).

Prayer:

Dear God, we humbly come before Your presence, longing to become people who belong to You, those who willingly listen to Your words. We understand that listening to Your words is crucial for us to become Your people and to welcome the Lord’s return. May You move our hearts and open our spiritual ears to hear Your words. Guide us to recognize Your voice, so that we may welcome Your second coming in this dark and evil age, and live in Your eternal light. Amen!
