I Am the Light of the World. A Commentary on John 8:12
I am the light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Thoughts on Today's Verse…
God is the truth, the way, and the life. As long as we listen to and act according to His words, we can walk in the light and gain His guidance and blessings, and also obtain life. In the beginning, Adam and Eve lost their lives because they didn’t obey God’s words. At that time, God told them, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die” (Gen 2:17). However, they doubted God’s words and heeded Satan’s words. From then on, mankind were corrupted by Satan, fell into darkness and were played with as a toy by Satan and abused by Satan. Just as in the late period of the Age of Law, people had no God’s place in their hearts. They became more and more sinful, and couldn’t uphold the laws God established. They were all in danger of being condemned to death for breaking the law. In order to redeem people’s sins so that they can be qualified to pray to God, God became flesh and worked among man. He spoke and brought new commandments to people, allowing them to follow Jesus’ teachings. For example, Jesus asks us to be honest people. When we do as Jesus says, we will feel released. However, in the late period of, we live in darkness again: We always live in the state of sinning and confessing because of failing to keep the Lord’s word; sometimes, our spirits feel dark and we have no enjoyment because of having no enlightenment in God’s words. ... Many of us feel very distressed. The key to solving these problems is to gain the Holy Spirit’s inspiration to find the ways of practice. Only God can free us from corrupted life. is the light and can bring us new life. Follow God’s word and we shall not go astray.
Let’s pray: Oh God! You know our deficiencies and weakness, and You further know that our spirits sink downward, we fail to keep Your words many times and we are distressed. May You help us believe in Your words and gain the provision of life from Your words, so that we can be strong and gain Your salvation. Amen!
